Is there a difference between drug addiction and substance abuse?

There’s drug abuse, and alcohol abuse… there’s a drug intervention and a substance abuse intervention… BUT… what is the difference between drug addiction and substance abuse?

Many people assume that addiction is simply an overuse of drugs, and that the addict is just a drug user who chooses to use too much. But research has shown that addiction, unlike casual drug use, is no longer a matter of free choice.

The National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine, the American Psychiatric Association, and the American Medical Association all define this state of driven, compulsive use as the essence of addiction.

Someone who abuses drugs may suffer negative consequences from using, as the addict does, but generally can and does stop when these consequences become too severe. If they do, hustle up and enter a luxury residential substance abuse treatment center in Malibu, CA.

Okay so you wanna tell me that an intervention can’t get the job done when it comes to getting a drug addict to drug rehab? Well, you can be a dumbass and tell me that if you want, but I’m living proof that an intervention can work. And it can. I had an intervention done on me and, no, it wasn’t the coolest, but it did work. I was a hard core junkie. I admit it. It wasn’t the best part of my life, but it happened. My mom and the rest of my family had gotten to the point where they were fed up and it was time for the shit to hit the fan. I came home one day to a house full of people and they sat me down and told me what was up. It was definitely uncomfortable but I looked at it the way that i was supposed to. They wanted the best for me and they wanted me to know how much they loved me. They told me that my addiction was breaking up the family and I had to do something to make things right. They were right. I went to drug treatment and got my life back in order. So don’t tell me that an intervention can’t work. I know.

There’s a pretty simple principle behind every intervention: Pull your head out of your ass.

Of course you’d never put it that way in polite company…but interventions aren’t exactly high on politesse in the first place. Pull your head out of your ass. That’s what I needed to hear, when they sat me down for my intervention. Get a clue. Look at what you’re doing to yourself. Look at what you’re doing to the people you care about.

Pull your head out, Jack…before you get the thing stuck up there for good.

My intervention got me sober. That is, my intervention got me to enroll in a drug rehab program, which set me on the road to getting sober. I can’t tell you where I’d be without it. Really can’t. The miracle of interventions is that they quite literally save you from yourself: They get you to see how badly you’ve screwed things up, which for most drug addicts is and has got to be the real germ seed of recovery.

So yes, please: Pull your head out of your ass. You’re missing a pretty good time out here with the rest of us.
